The Red Sox’ bullpen quietly has resumed operating near peak efficiency. In the team’s last 11 games, Red Sox relievers have allowed a run in just four of those games, good for a 1.60 ERA. During the last 32 games, Red Sox relievers have lowered their combined ERA from 5.42 to 3.86. In those 32 games, their combined ERA has been 2.80. Jonathan Paplebon has not allowed a run in his last 9 innings, this despite having an irritated nerve in his left elbow. Another standout is Craig Hansen, the reliever with a rediscovered slider. He has not allowed a run in his last six games and 6 innings. His ERA during his last nine appearances dating back to May 21 is 2.70.
Nation Notes: Daisuke Matsuzaka continued his trip back from right shoulder weakness, as he played catch up to 180 feet yesterday. He made 60 to 70 throws, according to the ballclub. He is scheduled to play catch again today, and then throw a bullpen session tomorrow. Also scheduled for a bullpen session of about 45 pitches today is Curt Schilling. Outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury took batting practice for the first time since he strained his right wrist sliding for a catch last Thursday. Ellsbury reported no problems. He will be re-evaluated today, but the team has its fingers crossed that Ellsbury will be able to play tonight. In two games since returning to Pawtucket after his one-game stint with the big league club, Chris Carter has hit two home runs with three extra-base hits and five RBI.
