Man, it feels good to say that. The Red Sox have a nice little cushion in the AL East and they’ve done it with five straight wins including three straight over the Yankees.
Friday’s game was the scariest. The Red Sox were down 6-2 heading into the eighth inning when they scored five runs off of three pitchers that included Mariano Rivera to make it a 7-6 win. Jason Varitek had a big day at the plate and he went three for four with a homerun, three RBIs and two runs. Mike Lowell had two hits and two runs while J.D. Drew singled three times. Kyle Snyder picked up the win and Hideki Okajima of all people picked up the save with a scoreless ninth.
Saturday’s game was a shootout to start but things calmed down and the Red Sox stayed on top with a 7-5 win. Josh Beckett improved to 4-0 despite a pretty mediocre start and the pen did their job with 2 1/3 scoreless innings. David Ortiz hit homerun number six and he drove in four runs and Kevin Youkilis went two for four with a walk, an RBI and two runs.
Yesterday, the Red Sox made history by hitting four homeruns in succession in the third inning. Manny Ramirez, J.D. Drew, Mike Lowell and Jason Varitek hit back to back to back to back homeruns and while they gave up the lead later in the game, they made up for it with three runs in the seventh to take the lead for good in the 7-6 win. Dice-K picked up the win despite probably his worst start of the season and Mike Lowell finished with two homeruns and four RBIs to finish up the sweep.
Next up is two against the Blue Jays and Tim Wakefield gets the start tonight. The Sox will have a tough one tomorrow as they’ll have to face Roy Halladay. Regardless, 12-5 is good for the best record in the AL and hopefully the Red Sox can stay there.
