Red Sox Split Rain Shortened Series With Mariners

by @ 6:27 pm. Filed under 2007 Season

The Red Sox and Mariners got two games in before the rain came and there were some pretty mixed results.  In the first game on Tuesday, the Red Sox scored 14 and they got some pretty good pitching from Josh Beckett.  J.D. Drew homered and drove in three runs while Jason Varitek had three hits and three RBIs in the 14-3 win.  Beckett gave up just a single run on two hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings and he improve to 2-0 on the season.

Then Felix Hernandez made an impact yesterday.  He held the Red Sox to a single hit and he upstaged Daisuke Matsuzaka in a 3-0 loss.  Dice-K lost his first major league game but it was still an impressive start.  He gave up three runs on eight hits and a walk with four strikeouts in seven innings.  The lone hit was a single by J.D. Drew that just slipped through the infield.

So the Red Sox stand at 4-4 and they’re a game back of the Jays.  That should be a half game because the Jays are down 5-2 late to the Tigers.  A tough Angels team comes into town though and this should be a very interesting four game series.  Tim Wakefield will face John Lackey tomorrow in the opener.  Hopefully the rain stays away.
