The Sox came back from a 4-3 deficit to take the first game of a brief two-game series 6-4 over the Indians. Julio Lugo lead off the top of the ninth inning with a double, he then tied the game at 4-4 after a deep sacrifice fly by Dustin Pedroia. Big Papi then dumped a bloop into left field, followed by the big blow: a Manny Ramirez home. Which was his 493rd home run, tying him with Lou Gehrig and Fred McGriff for 24th all-time. Starter Jon Lester wasn’t sharp, walking five over 4 1/3 innings of work. Lester needs to pitch down in the strike zone and use all of his pitches if he expects to continue to succeed at the major league level. Julian Tavarez pitching in relief of Lester, saved the day and the bullpen, throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings while fanning five.
Sox Notes: Barring a change in plans, Jed Lowrie will make his big-league debut tonight for the Sox, most likely at third. Kyle Snyder, who had been designated for assignment April 6, cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple A Pawtucket. Snyder is likely to start for the PawSox. So far, Bryan Corey, designated for assignment last Friday, has surprisingly elicited little interest from other clubs.
